Young, charismatic and dexterous designer Karn Malhotra showcased his chic debut collection ‘The Siren Squad’ last week at Lakmé Fashion week ’16. It flaunted a range of eclectic outfits with traces of modern androgyny blended with sensuality in feminine cuts and styles. The show began with Anushka Ranjan in a crisp white shirt and stylish pink pants that represented a range of day and sundowner-wear. It ended on a sexy note as Amy Jackson sashayed down the ramp looking ravishing in a monochrome ensemble mesmerising the audience with stripes and bling on the bodice.
'The Siren Squad' is the designers first exclusive prêt collection that represents courageous women of the 21st century. He envisages these bold women as women who can lure, mesmerise and leave you spellbound with their confidence, wit and style. The collection is a blend of shimmer and bold retro colour blocking that can transition from day to night.
Drawing inspiration from global mainstream popular culture and Karn’s own personal style, this line represents ideas, perspectives and attitudes of today. Feminine silhouettes with optical stripes, sheet sequence and mesh accented with buckles, belts, clasps and studs aims at engaging the audience’s aesthetic sensibilities. A base palette of black and white makes an ideal canvas to block with brighter, fun summer shades. The coloured stripes represent a similar idea of bold contrasts. The use of mesh and metal adds edginess whereas the sequins help elevate the glamour quotient of the outfits. Fabrics like scuba, heavy crepe, etc, and hardware like chains, big gold buttons and straps with bold coloured stripes add character to his collection that includes Tudor shirts, crop tops, pencil skirts, rompers, cocktail dresses and jackets with pirate sleeves.

Since childhood, Karn Malhotra had always held a deep passion for the arts. Despite having an unconventional educational background with a Masters in CA, this adroit designer always knew designing was his true calling. Growing up with a strong art influence around him, sketching designs onto paper came naturally to him. Born and brought up in India’s fashion capital - Mumbai, this dynamic designer returned to his home town after bagging his accounting degree from Canada. While in Canada, he continued to grow as a designer by indulging in various freelance projects as a stylist and distance courses in fashion. Upon his return, he decided to contrive his travels and experiences into his first couture collection, launched at the Indian International Jewellery Week in 2014. His show-stopper, actress Shraddha Kapoor looked stunning in a baroque inspired pink and olive gown. He then launched his first resort wear collection which was showcased at the India Beach Fashion Week 2015 in Goa. He continues to thrive, and take inspiration from the vision of some of the biggest success stories in fashion. Karn Malhotra has already established his niche in the fashion industry, catering to today’s modern woman who is fearless and keen to express herself through her sense of style. His cozy workplace cum studio in Mumbai has already made a place for itself on the shopping grid of many fashionistas. This spirited designer captures the true essence of the modern day woman, crafting her ideologies into breath taking silhouettes and prepossessing colours.
